The Republican October 10, 2011  Four teams from Garrett County participated in Tucker Community Foundation’s Run For It event, a community- benefit race that raises support and awareness for local causes.

Garrett College team members walked and ran in support of the Garrett College Foundation that provides scholarships and promotes Garrett College in the community.  This was the first appearance in the event for the 13 member team led by Team Captain Ann Wellham, Dean of Marketing & Enrollment Management.  Team member Scott MacLennan won a $100 5k Luck of the Draw award that will be added to the team’s entry fees and sponsor donations and donated to the GC Foundation.

Also entering for the first time was Team Always Fit led by Team Captain Evie Harrison.  Team members showed their fitness by walking and running for the Garrett Mentoring program.  Twenty team members demonstrated their team spirit by parading in the day’s most creative and eye catching costume.  Team member Arthur Hanlin received a $100 2k Luck of the Draw award that will also be added to the teams entry fees and sponsor donations and donated to the mentoring program.

Back in the race for their third year, Team Garrett Mentors On-The-Move was led by Team Captain Bonnie Swyter.  The 17 member team had a strong showing, ending the day with $1,673 in race proceeds to donate to the popular mentoring program that serves more than 100 children in grades k-5 in Garrett County public schools.  The program provides an adult mentor to help children succeed academically and socially. The team captured the $1,100 Best of Garrett County Award provided by Tucker Community Foundation, Garrett College, Republican News, and First United Bank and Trust.

Members of the Hickory Ridge Running Club, led by Mike Jennings, raised support for general recreation opportunities in the Garrett County area.

This year’s Run For It generated more than $90,000 for the 24 teams and other causes represented on race day.   The annual program kicks off April 1 and culminates with a 2k/5k walk and run held the last weekend in September during Leaf Peepers Festival in Davis.  Race proceeds benefit nonprofits and charitable causes in the region served by Tucker Community Foundation.  For more information, contact the Foundation office at 304-478-2930 or visit www.tuckerfoundation.net.
