– August 6, 2015 – Pocahontas County Commissioners invested $2,500 in local teams participating in Tucker Community Foundation’s Run For It – a program designed to help community organizations and nonprofits raise awareness and support while participating in a healthy activity.

Two Pocahontas County teams are registered for this year’s 2k walk and 5k race scheduled for 11 am, Saturday, Sept. 26:  the Pocahontas County Senior Citizens Team led by Sally Lovelace and Team Challenged Athletes led by David Begg. Their efforts to enlist team members and team sponsor support will be rewarded on race day by the new Pocahontas County Commission Awards.

The Pocahontas Commission is the sixth county to partner with the Tucker Community Foundation in the Run For It program. Commissioners from Barbour, Randolph, Tucker, Preston County West Virginia, and Garrett County, Maryland have each contributed between $500 – $5,000 to support their local teams.  Their contribution helps to leverage additional resources for their county and motivates participation.

Since 2007, the program has generated $775,000 for the region served by Tucker Community Foundation which includes Barbour, Grant, Mineral, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker County, West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. Teams from Pocahontas County have been participating since 2009.

More than $84,000 in cash prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the race.  All proceeds are donated to the winner’s community cause. With more than 100 award categories, there is plenty of opportunity to cash in.  Speed is not required to win.

Run For It is held during Leaf Peepers Festival. The 2k walk and 5k run starts and finishes in front on the Davis Volunteer Fire Department on Rt. 32.  Racers can enjoy music, craft vendors, food and other festivities before and after the race.
