Gnegy Awarded Colbert Scholarship

Katelyn L. Gnegy of Oakland, MD has been awarded the 2011 Joyce Colbert Scholarship Award by the Tucker Community Foundation Board of Directors.  Gnegy is the daughter of Daniel & Mary Gnegy and a graduate of Southern Garrett High School.  She plans to major in Animal Sciences at Garrett College in McHenry MD.

The Colbert Fund was established as a memorial tribute to honor the career and contributions of Dr. Joyce Colbert, DVM, a former resident of Deer Park, MD., who was born in 1959 in Louisville KY, and raised in Kentucky, Delaware, and Northern Ireland.  Dr. Colbert had a passion for farm animals.  After graduating from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, she moved to Garrett County in the late 1980’s and established Deer Park Veterinary Services where she practiced until her death in 2007.  The Colbert Fund is directed to building rural veterinary resources in Tucker and Preston Counties, WV and Garrett County, MD by providing support for production-animal veterinary education.

Foundation scholarships are based on a competitive application process and awarded in the spring of each year to students in an eight-county region.  Funding is provided by income generated from Endowed and unrestricted funds managed by the Foundation along with pass-through donations and Kep and Alice Smith Trust income. 2011 awards ranged from $500 to $4,000.
