Preston Journal July 2011

Sean Bernatowicz of Tunnelton, WV, a graduate of Preston High School, has been awarded $2,500 from the P.L. & Elizabeth Cook Milkint Scholarship Fund to help him pursue biochemistry studies at West Virginia University.  In addition to academics, Bernatowicz has been active in FFA, 4-H, FBLA and church activities.

The Milkint Fund was established by the estate of Peter Louis Milkint and wife, Elizabeth Cook Milkint, through the Hope, Love and Charity Foundation and Our lady of the Pines, a small church that was constructed on the Milkint property across from Silver Lake.  The Milkint Fund provides annual scholarships to a Tucker or Preston County college student that has good work ethics; and has been actively involved in school, community and church activities. Sean is the son of Louis and Connie Bernatowicz.

Mary Noland, of Terra Alta, has been named recipient of the Dr. Mary Alice Klein Scholarship award.  Noland is a graduate of Preston High School and plans to attend West Virginia University majoring in Elementary Education.  She is the daughter of Larry & Laurie Noland.

Dr. Mary Alice Klein was a native of Tucker County and 1951 valedictorian of Thomas High School.  A graduate of Shepherd College, she earned her master’s degree in educational administration and her doctorate from West Virginia University.  Dr. Klein served as superintendent of Tucker County Schools from 1986 to 1999 and Upshur County Schools for the last two years of her career, retiring in 2001. After her death in 2002, her husband and children established an endowed fund in her memory.  The fund provides support for students working towards a bachelors, masters, or doctorate degree in education.

Tucker Community Foundation scholarships are based on a competitive application process and awarded each spring to students in an eight-county region.  Applications are available online.  Funding for the scholarships are provided by income generated from Endowed and unrestricted funds managed by the Foundation, pass-through donations, and Kep and Alice Smith Trust income. 2011 awards ranged from $500 to $4,000.
