August 2009  The Tucker Community Foundation has announced the start of the 2009 grant cycle.  Applications are available for non- profit groups, community organizations, and groups that perform charitable work within the Foundation’s 6 county service area.  The Foundation serves Barbour, Grant, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph and Tucker Counties.

Applications can be downloaded from the Grants link of the Foundation web site at www.tuckerfoundation.net, at Five Rivers Library in Parsons, and Mountain Top Library in Thomas.  The deadline to apply is Sept. 18 (postmark).  Applications can be mailed, or delivered to the Foundation office on the second floor of the Tucker County Board of Education Annex.

Grant monies are derived from a variety of endowed funds, trust income, pass through donations and unrestricted funds.  Endowed funds support the arts, recreation, health, youth, education, historic and cemetery preservation, senior citizens and general charitable needs. A list of all the endowed funds can be viewed at www.tuckerfoundation.net.

Foundation grants offer a variety of distribution options.  For example, the Fred T. Busk Fund supports educational opportunities to artists wishing to further their career, the John P. & Sarah C. Swartz Fund supports music education in Tucker county schools, and the Sarah Thompson Kaemmerling Fund supports charitable, educational or scientific activities for Davis, Thomas, and the Canaan Valley area.  There are more than 50 endowed funds that award annual grants.

According to Robert Burns, Executive Director, “The Foundation has approximately $40,000 ready to be distributed for the current grant cycle. We have both unrestricted and restricted funds available under this program, so we should be able to support a broad base of charitable activity this year.”

Applicants needing help with the application are encouraged to attend a Question and Answer session on this year’s application Thursday, Aug 27th, 5:00 p.m. at the Foundation office.
