A Mineral County resident received a scholarship from the Tucker Community Foundation.

Skylar Simmons of Elk Garden is the recipient of $1,250 scholarship from the Tucker Community Foundation’s Kline, Evans, Allison Scholarship Fund. Simmons plans to attend Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical School to become a phlebotomy technician. Her mother is Crystal Dunithan of Elk Garden.

In her application Cannon said she knew since she was a Junior that she wanted to become a phlebotomy technician.

“I remember looking into the program and calling to discuss the program, and I had so many questions. After I was done on the phone, I knew that after graduation I would be going to Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical School. My biggest goal now is receiving a phlebotomy certificate so I can begin my career,” she wrote.

Simmons received numerous accolades throughout her high school years. She was an honor roll student throughout her high school years. She has done all this while working as a cashier at a local general store. 

Overall, the Tucker Community Foundation awarded over $82,000 in scholarships to 55 area students in nine counties. Funds for the awards are generated by endowed funds, pass-through donations, and unrestricted income managed by the Foundation.
