Randolph County Teams Ready to Run For It
September 2, 2016 –
Ten teams are seeking to raise support for Randolph County causes in Tucker Community Foundation’s 10th annual Run For It. Teams are seeking team members and sponsor support to help capture a slice of the $85,000 that will be awarded on Saturday, September 24 at Run For It, a 2k walk and 5k run around the Town of Davis, WV.
Returning Randolph County teams include Knights of Columbus Council #603, Rowdy Readers, Team Pioneer, and multi county team, Citizens Bank of WV (in support of the Randolph-Tucker Children’s Advocacy Center). Teams entering the race for their first run are the ArtsBank Art Educators, Cub Scout Pack 88, Homestead PTA, the Literacy Volunteers of Randolph County, Tygarts Valley Youth Football & Cheerleading, and multi county team, Highlands Trails Foundation.
ArtsBank Art Educators, led by Kadra Casseday and Scottie Wiest, are looking for support for their program to expand arts experiences in Randolph County schools and to cultivate artistically literate citizens. Mark Joseph is leading the Knights of Columbus team to support their work to overcome adversity in the world through the five key areas of service, faith, community, family, youth, and fellowship.
Charles Friddle has rallied Cub Scout Pack 88 in order to garner support for their scouting program that builds character, encourages physical fitness, and develops young people into responsible citizens. Candice Pudder is heading up the Tygarts Valley Youth Football & Cheerleading team to help provide additional safety equipment to enhance their programs. Team Captain, Ronni Phares, is working to help the Homestead PTA team to raise money and awareness for their efforts to get new playground equipment for their school.
Literacy and libraries in Randolph County are important causes that are represented by three different teams. New this year is the Literacy Volunteers of Randolph County, led by Akiko Endo. They provide tutoring in basic reading to adults and English as a Second Language for residents in Randolph and adjoining counties. Rowdy Readers and Team Pioneer are back again with their strong, dedicated teams. Rowdy Readers, led by Team Captain Sharon Mallow, are working hard to ensure Russell Memorial Public Library continues to provide the best service possible to their community. The Pioneer Memorial Public Library, represented by Team Pioneer and Captain Genevieve Brosky, is raising money and support to enhance their services and to promote literacy and the love of learning in Harman School and the entire community.
Some regional teams that provide services in Randolph County include the Citizens Bank of WV team, Highlands Trail Foundation, and WV Trout Unlimited. The Citizens Bank of WV team, led by Kathy Leombruno, is again running to benefit the Randolph/Tucker Children’s Advocacy Center which provides the highest standard of care for child victims. Mandy Sullivan is heading up the Highlands Trail Foundation team which is gathering support to develop recreational trail opportunities in the Potomac Highlands. Team Captain Mike Sayre is fishing around for support for the West Virginia Council of Trout Unlimited. WV Trout Unlimited works to conserve, protect, and restore our state’s cold-water fisheries, their watersheds, and our wild trout.
Since 2007, the Run For It program has generated $900,000 for the region served by Tucker Community Foundation which includes Barbour, Grant, Mineral, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker County, West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. Teams from Randolph County have brought in over $120,000 in awards and team sponsor support through the program. All proceeds are donated to the winner’s community cause. With more than 100 award categories, there is plenty of opportunity to cash in. Speed is not required to win.
Run For It is held on the streets of Davis during Leaf Peepers Festival. The 2k walk and 5k run starts and finishes in front on the Davis Volunteer Fire Department on Route 32. Racers can enjoy music, craft vendors, food and other festivities before and after the race.
