November 7, 2011  The grants committee of Tucker Community Foundation presented its recommendations for distribution of grant awards totaling more than $ 47,000 at the Oct. 19 board meeting.  Several of the awards benefit programs in Barbour County.

The Brownton Community Center received a $500 mini-grant to purchase a popcorn maker that will be used for youth and family movie nights and other community functions.  Proceeds from popcorn sales will be used to help offset utility bills. The Junior Elementary PTO received a $400 mini-grant for the purchase of playground mats to be used under the swings and sliding board.

Girls on the Run (GOTR), a program serving Randolph, Barbour and Tucker Counties, received $1,500 of unrestricted funds for program support.  The program provides 3rd-5th grade girls an opportunity to take part in a 12-week curriculum that addresses self-esteem, fitness and lifestyle issues and culminates with a 5K community run. The grant will provide funding support for GOTR scholarships, costs associated with expanded programs planned for the spring, and appropriate footwear for those in need.

Central WV Center for Pregnancy Care, Inc. a multi-county agency, received $660 for the purchase of new, safe baby beds for families facing financial challenges, domestic violence, relocation or lack of support from extended family.

The St. George Clinic received $1,000 to help fund the upgrade of electrical services necessary for expansion of services and a growing patient load.  Barbour County is included in the clinics six-county service area.

Tucker Community Foundation grants support programs and projects related to the arts, parks and recreation, animal welfare, health, libraries and literacy programs, churches, educational programs, emergency services, youth, education, historic preservation, senior citizens and general charitable purposes. Funding for designated and competitive grants are provided by Endowed Funds established by donors to benefit local causes and managed by the Foundation.  Pass-through donations, Kep and Alice Smith Trust income, and additional unrestricted funds also provide funding.   To view a complete list of Endowed Funds or visit www.tuckerfoundation.net
