Pocahontas County Teams Ready to Run For It

September 23, 2016 –

This year there are three Pocahontas County teams participating in Tucker Community Foundations 10th Annual Run For It event. Veteran teams include the Pocahontas County Senior Citizens and Challenged Athletes of WV. New to the race this year is the Linwood Lizards team. Supporters can help these teams by entering the race or by making a team sponsor donation.

Run For It is a 2k walk and 5k race scheduled for 11am, Saturday, September 24 in Davis, WV. The event helps community organizations and nonprofits raise support and awareness for their causes and encourages people to participate in a healthy activity. Pocahontas County Commissioners have invested $3,000 to award the local teams participating. Last year the commission’s investment helped leverage an additional $20,000 for Pocahontas County teams.

Linwood Learning Adventures has gotten the Linwood Lizards together to support their nonprofit youth programs serving children from infancy through school age. Led by team captain Amber McClure the Linwood Lizards are ready for their inaugural race. Challenged Athletes of West Virginia are a seasoned line-up of Run For It participants. David Begg, team captain, has directed his team to success in the awards year after year. Once again, Challenged Athletes is a strong contender in their efforts to grow awareness and support for the provision of sports and recreation opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. Another steady team is the Pocahontas County Senior Citizens. Under the leadership of Anna McCarty, the Pocahontas Senior Citizens are promoting their mission to alleviate senior hunger and social isolation, and to promote life, health, honor, and dignity for the aging and disabled in Pocahontas County.

Since 2007, the program has generated $900,000 for the region served by Tucker Community Foundation which includes Barbour, Grant, Mineral, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker County, West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. Teams from Pocahontas County have brought in over $65,000 in awards and team sponsor support through the program.

More than $85,000 in cash prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the race. All proceeds are donated to the winner’s community cause. With more than 100 award categories, there is plenty of opportunity to cash in. Speed is not required to win.

Run For It is held on the streets of Davis during Leaf Peepers Festival. The 2k walk and 5k run starts and finishes in front on the Davis Volunteer Fire Department on Route 32. Racers can enjoy music, craft vendors, food and other festivities before and after the race.
