Garrett County Teams Ready to Run For It

September 2, 2016 –

Teams in the area are geared up for Tucker Community Foundation’s 10th Annual Run For It, a 2k walk and 5k race scheduled for 11am, Saturday, September 24 in Davis, WV. Garrett County teams are in the race raising support and awareness for the benefit of Garrett Trails, the Kalie Hostutler Ashby Academic Achievement Fund, and Oakland Rotary Satellite Club.

This year Garrett County Commissioners have invested $1,000 to award county teams. In the past two years, their investment has helped leverage an additional $11,000 in awards and team sponsor donations. Capitalizing on this unique program that rewards effort, motivates participation in healthy activity, and leverages additional support for the county, the Garrett County Commissioner is one of six county commissions that are supporting their respective teams through the Run For It program.

The Garrett Trails team, led by Steven Green, is a strong contender. They are garnering support for the development of a well-used network of high quality, sustainable trails to attract visitors and promote fitness and outdoor enjoyment for county residents. Kim DeGiovanni has gotten Kalie’s Crew together to run and walk in support of the Kalie Hostutler Ashby Academic Achievement Fund, which promotes high academic achievement through the support of scholastic activities. New to the race is the Oakland Rotary Satellite Club. Team Captain Haley Gillespie, is working to support the satellite branch of the main Rotary Club. The Satellite Club is dedicated to performing acts of service in the community, like the annual Sock Drive and assisting other area clubs with projects and events.

Since 2007, the program has generated over $900,000 for the region served by Tucker Community Foundation which includes Barbour, Grant, Mineral, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker County, West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. More than $85,000 in cash prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the 2016 race. All proceeds are donated to the winner’s community cause. With more than 100 award categories, there is plenty of opportunity to cash in. Speed is not required to win.

Run For It is held on the streets of Davis during Leaf Peepers Festival. The 2k walk and 5k run starts and finishes in front on the Davis Volunteer Fire Department on Route 32. Racers can enjoy music, craft vendors, food and other festivities before and after the race.
