Donors create new pass-through scholarship

February 28, 2017 –

Jack and Jean Smith of Alexandria, Virginia have created a new opportunity for students in the counties served by Tucker Community Foundation who are pursuing post-secondary college or trade school education.  Starting in 2017, a pass-through donation to the Foundation is providing a scholarship that will follow the student through school providing additional support after successful completion of the previous semester.

For those interested in applying, grades are important but not the only criteria that will determine selection. Work and volunteer experience will be considered; the applicant should demonstrate good character and have a desire to earn a successful living and willingness to benefit the community.  Financial need is a consideration as well as an expressed determination to succeed in life.

The Smith Patterson Pass-Through Scholarship acknowledges the friendship and mutual respect shared with Vernon and JoAnn Patterson, who upon retirement, took up permanent residence in Canaan Valley and continue a very active lifestyle that benefits many different organizations and individuals.

Tucker Community Foundation serves seven counties in West Virginia: Barbour, Grant, Mineral, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph and Tucker; and Garrett County, Maryland.
