Barbour County Teams Ready to Run For It

September 2, 2016 –

Tucker Community Foundations 10th Annual Run For It event includes five Barbour County teams looking to raise awareness and support for their causes. With over $85,000 in prize money available, Barbour County’s teams are looking for team members and sponsor support to help them maintain a strong showing. Barbour County Team Health, Belington Public Library Bookaneers, the Freedom Marchers, Kasson Eagles, and Philippi Public Library Bookworms are all geared up to grow support for their beneficial programs and projects.

Barbour County Team Health, led this year by Dana Gould, is dedicated to developing increased health and wellness opportunities for residents of Barbour County including health education and promotion, healthy eating, and expansion of physical exercise amenities. Barbour County Team Health had a strong inaugural year in 2015, and is looking to grow that this year.

The librarians in Barbour County are no rookies in the Run For It program. Both the Belington Public Library Bookaneers, with Tammy Smith at the helm, and the Philippi Library Bookworms, led by Judy Larry, are often showing up in the top 10 list of teams. The two library teams garnered over $23,000 last year and are both on their way to another strong showing in 2016. The Bookworms are raising support to update library services and programs and to maintain their aging facility. The Bookaneers will use their proceeds to inform, educate, enlighten, and entertain their community with high quality materials, resources, and opportunities.

Kasson Eagles are back again with Tracy Knotts leading the way. The Kasson PTO supports the teachers and students with assemblies, classroom supplies, playground equipment, field trips, and more. Richard Marsh and the Freedom Marchers have returned to support the Belington American Legion Post 96 & Auxiliary. Each year, the Freedom Marchers team comes out and gets the word out to support their programs including patriotic education in schools, youth sports sponsorships, care packages to deployed troops, and many more worthwhile activities.

The Barbour County Commission is one of six county commissions that are capitalizing on this unique program that rewards effort, motivates participation in a healthy activity, and leverages additional support for the county. Barbour County Commissioners’ investment over the past three years has leveraged over $80,000 in additional sponsor donations and awards for county teams.

Since 2007, the program has generated $900,000 for the region served by Tucker Community Foundation which includes Barbour, Grant, Mineral, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker County, West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. Teams from Barbour County have brought in over $140,000 in awards and team sponsor support through the program. All proceeds are donated to the winner’s community cause. With more than 100 award categories, there is plenty of opportunity to cash in. Speed is not required to win.
