Tucker Community Foundation kicked off its 4th annual Run For It campaign April 1.  This year’s race will be held Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m., an hour later than in previous years.

The race starts and ends at the Davis Fire Hall on Rt. 32 in Davis.  The annual event is a 2k (1.2 miles) walk on level pavement around town and a 5k (3.1 miles) walk and competitive run that winds up, down and around town.  The race is held in conjunction with Leaf Peepers Festival and it draws a large crowd from all over the mid-Atlantic region as racers run, walk, roll and stroll to raise funds for, and awareness of, their favorite community cause.  Entry fees, sponsor donations and cash awards are donated to the racer’s cause.

Run For It started in 2007.  Since then more than $140,000 has been distributed to a wide variety of causes within the region served by the Foundation.  In previous races, teams and individuals have raced in support of libraries, parks, youth organizations, the arts, senior citizens, animal welfare, school athletic teams, bands and classroom projects, and civic organizations and projects, just to name a few.

Some participants use the event to walk in memory or honor of a loved one; others join in just for the fun of it; some walk or run with the goal of initiating an Endowed Fund while others race in support of existing Endowed Funds.  The Foundation currently manages 82 Endowed Funds that support annual grant and scholarship awards that are distributed around the region.

Run For It is geared for all ages and abilities.  Being fast is not a requirement.  Babies and strollers, competitive runners, and the casual walker all line up to vie for cash prizes that will be awarded to the cause they support.  The Foundation offers $5,300 in cash awards to 16 prize categories.  Match Donors add to the award purse.  Match Donors are a distinguished group of community organizations, businesses and individuals who support the event with generous donations to the Award Purse. To date, Match Donations have been received from Western Pocahontas Properties, Davis Health Systems and St. George Medical Clinic.  Additional pledges have been promised. Visit the Run For It link at www.tuckerfoundation.net for updates on the Award Purse.  Medallions are awarded by age category to the fastest 5k racers.

The 2010 Event Packet is available online and mailed by request. For entry forms and event information, visit the Run For It link at www.tuckerfoundation.net or call the Foundation office at 304-478-2930.  Public Q&A sessions will be held around the region.  Check the Foundation website and area newspapers for the time and location of those meetings.
